The Shri Amarnath Barfani Yatra is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage undertaken annually to the holy Amarnath Cave Temple located in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir. Devotees from across India and the world embark on this spiritual journey to seek blessings of Lord Shiva, who is symbolized in the form of a naturally formed ice Shivling, known as Baba Barfani. According to Hindu belief, this is the place where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. The yatra for the year 2025 begins on July 3rd and concludes on August 9th, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Pilgrims can take either the longer but gradual Pahalgam route (48 km) or the shorter, steeper Baltal route (14 km) to reach the cave. Registration is mandatory and includes obtaining a medical fitness certificate for individuals aged between 13 and 70. Due to security concerns, helicopter services are not available this year, and the routes have been declared no-fly zones. For those unable to travel physically, the official mobile app offers live darshan and aarti, making it possible to participate virtually.
